View of the Canal Saint-Martin by Alfred Sisley

The quiet ripples of the Canal St Martin and the joviality of the sky are components in this picture of which he gave many rural variations. Sisley did not paint that many cities views as other Impressionist painters and was perhaps the one who liked the countryside best, for its own sake as well as a subject to paint.

A vast section of the Canal St Martin near the Bassin de la Villette in Paris is seen in this landscape. Houses and warehouses line both sides of the canal, while buildings in the distance, past the lock and towards the city center, loom large in the haze. The Canal is bathed in a blazing sun that is almost at its peak, judging by the shadows. However, a strong breeze is moving the water and lowering the temperature, while clouds scud across the blue sky overhead. Because of the lack of leaves on the trees and on the ground, the image is most likely set in early Spring.

Sisley uses a silvery palette of blues and greys to depict the scene, thickening the paint for the water's highlights. The coolness of the light and its reflections indicate that the rest of the picture was done spontaneously outdoors, en plein air. He would almost certainly have sketched a layout of the composition beforehand, and he might have finished the shaded buildings back in the studio, but the rest of the picture would have been done spontaneously outdoors, en plein air. Sisley, like his friend Claude Monet, recognized the value of juxtaposing fluid patches (such as water or sky) with fixed objects like as bridges and buildings. He contrasts the vast area of water with the lines of buildings from both sides of the canal, as well as the lock bridge at the end, in this attractive composition. The sun sparkles on the canal's surface are so realistic that they make you blink.
