The Drawing Room at Townshend House by Lawrence Alma Tadema
This profoundly mind-boggling watercolor shows one of a suite of resplendent drawing rooms in the artist's home, Townshend House in Regent's Park, London. This was the studio-place of the Dutch painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) and his family, where he made a lot of luxurious and diverse insides in an assortment of styles running from customary Dutch to Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Pompeiian, Byzantine, and Japanese. The rooms and decorations filled in as props for Sir Lawrence's paintings and gave motivation to his second spouse Laura Epps and his little girl Anna who were likewise artists. Anna Alma-Tadema painted this watercolor while still a young person, showing a gifted ability for close perception and gem-like coloring. Before, this work was mistaken for the watercolor that she showed at the Royal Academy in 1885 entitled 'The Gold Room'. In any case, given the date recorded by the artist in small letters on the base left, "10/9/85", this would not have been conceivable as the Academy display occurred before in the year. It appears to be sure this is rather the work entitled just 'The Drawing Room' that Anna displayed at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1886. A contemporary commentator thought the work 'bewildering… for its authority of detail, expound minuteness of work and sparkle of color'. In 1886 the Alma-Tademas moved to Grove End Road in the mainstream artistic enclave of St. John's Wood. This is one of a progression of watercolors that Anna Alma-Tadema painted of insides in Townshend House, perhaps planned to record the esthetic vibe her father had made before the rooms were destroyed. The view glances through an opening from the 'Gold Room' into the 'Sectioned Drawing Room', however, the segments themselves are covered up. In 1882 the room was depicted in the Magazine of Art as having a 'roof… upheld by Ionic pillars...while extraordinary pads of Oriental stuffs are piled upon the chairs..A segment of this room, or rather compartment - for there are no entryways between the drawing-rooms, yet just passages and shades - is hung with blood-red Persian appliqué work in the velvet of some significant artifact, when the decoration of a castle in Venice when she "held the beautiful East in charge"'.
