Phidias Showing the Frieze by Lawrence Alma Tadema | Fine Arts Prints

You can't get significantly more Classical than this for motivation. In the painting, which happens at some point in the fifth century BCE, the famous old Greek stone carver Phidias (ca. 480-430 BCE), the man in obscurity robes in the middle, flaunts the glorious creation he's made for Athens' famous sanctuary, the Parthenon. The companions, clearly wealthy residents of Athens, appreciate his handiwork. The frieze of the Parthenon is a long arrangement of etched bas-reliefs, etched from marble, that decorated the highest point of the Parthenon underneath the overhang. The frieze, obviously delineating a stylized parade of the Athenians, was/is one of the incredible works of art of old-style Greece. Students of history are uncertain whether it was cut set up or cut already and in one way or another raised up toward the roof. Most of the frieze was expelled from the Parthenon around 1800 and now lives in the British Museum in London, where Alma-Tadema saw it. (I saw it there too in the year 2000). This brilliant painting joins the best of nineteenth-century Classical-themed art with a kind of sentimental tinged authenticity. The figures do seem practical, however, adapted in a route the vast majority of us would consider antiquated Greece, thinking back on it from a few thousand years. Note, in any case, the hairdos on Phidias and the man on the extreme left, and Phidias' facial hair twists. The tight unusual hair, a piece too flawless to even think about looking regular, is how the hair was often depicted in old Greek art. The colors here are warm and rich, practically reminiscent of nineteenth-century gaslight.
