Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker who profoundly perfumed and practiced of psychological themes in his paintings, which were established upon some of the main principles of late 19th-century Symbolism and greatly inspired German Expressionism in the early 20th century. Edvard Munch best-known work is The Scream, painted in 1893 which has supported the development of Modernism in the twentieth century.
Edvard Munch was eighteen years old, and a student at the Royal School of Drawing in Kristiania (Oslo), when at the beginning of 1882 he painted his first self-portrait. This painting exhibits the classic ideals upheld by the school. Edvard Munch portrait is painted with a very fine brush. Edvard Munch head is turned to the right in a three-quarter profile. The face is modeled by light and shadow. The Self-portrait itself is treated in warm brown tones and placed in front of a cooler, dark background. The young artist has an upright posture and is nicely dressed in a shirt and jacket as he directs a watchful glance to the side, towards the mirror or the spectator.
