Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci
The Mona Lisa, arguably Renaissance art's greatest treasure, is one of the Louvre's numerous masterpieces of High Renaissance painting. The painting is known as La Gioconda in Italy and La Joconde in France. The painting is widely considered to be the best example of portrait art ever created, as well as one of the greatest Renaissance paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries.
Despite being the most renowned painting in the world, the Mona Lisa is neither signed nor dated, as are all of Leonardo's works. Its title derives from Giorgio Vasari's (1511-74) biography of Leonardo da Vinci, which was published about 1550 and recorded Leonardo's willingness to paint the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a Florentine government official and affluent silk merchant.
The woman is seated upright and sideways in a chair, her face and chest tilted slightly towards the observer, a stance inspired from the 'pyramid' painting depicting a sitting Madonna. Her left arm rests comfortably on the chair's armrest, and her right arm, which crosses her front, clasps her left arm. The armrest, as well as her slightly protective position, gives a sense of separation between sitter and viewer.
